at 56 about to take a life changing decision. to take early retirement and study full time for a degree in ancient history
finance look OK but things could get a bit tight if my partner (also 56) has to give up work for any reason. been with the company for 30+ years. big wrench to leave but always wanted to do a degree - nerves jangling and bottle going - do i do it or not?

First reaction is yes do it if your partner is happy to support you now is the moment to seize. Also if you have no dependents then what's the worst that can happen. You can get part time employment as younger students do and holiday work It looks ike you have a chance tohave another go at this life - so take it don't regret not doing it - perhaps your copmany can employ you as a consultant in the summer hols or on special projects?
In my experience, we seldom regret the opportunities we take; we always regret the opportunities that we miss.
My advice would be to take the chance, live your dream and do what is important to you today. You're going to have to leave your company sooner or later anyway
Today is already yesterday's tomorrow. Plan for the worst, hope for the best and go for your life !
Good luck !!
Just get on a do whatever it is you have to do. Otherwise it might be too late. And you shouldn't live with regrets.
True decisions like this will only work when made together - and it sounds like that is what you have both done. You have of course asked your question on a real "go for it" site so most people here, me included, would say just that! All the best with whatever you choose to do, and please keep us updated on here, on progress. David
I appalud you red-ted, not just for having a name that's so cool, buy also for having the guts to do something with your life because you want to. Good on you. Take a chance. that's what life is for, living.
There are a lot of people in this world who end up in nursing homes or the like and regret they missed out on things. So my advice to anyone who wants to take a risk. Take it, go for it and make it work.
I have just complete a vocational degree at the age of 49 - it has been the best , hardest, exciting and challenging 3 years of my life - and I have no regrets - remember to just keep taking small bites of the course so that it does not become too overwhelming.
It is good to hear that it is a choice made by the two of you as you will need lots of understanding when you have deadlines and exams.
Most of all you might think you are 56 in physical years, but the great thing about learning fresh topics is that it brings forth the excitiment of finding out about new things just like when you were a child.
Lastly, you will be an inspiration to friends and family - it is easy to stay in the same routine but exhilarating to jump into the dark.
Go for it and have fun - and don't forget to buy the university hoodie
Just do it. Go with your instints. That what we all do and how we survive.
