Be available

BE available to your team. It's not just about being visible, knowing the names of your staff and walking your department every day. That is not enough. People are no longer motivated by your presence alone.

You must also be available to them, in their time and on their terms. Many leaders are now ensuring personal accessibility to all, at set times, in specific ways. Try it. Most people will never take you up on the offer although they will admire, applaud and respect your actions.

I think it's critical that business leaders lead by example and don't shy away from their responsibilities. They have to be visible to give others confidence as it's vital they contribute as much as their staff.

It goes without saying that a leader should eb the man the rest look up to and respect. If he is not being visible he won't get a lot of that. So it's a must in the role they have.

One good way to do this is to get to know your staff and what they each need as individuals. If you have a large team to manage then focus on the key people first - team-leaders etc.

If you know them as people you will recognise the signs indicating they need help from you.
