Don't let recession get you down

DOES recession equal depression in your business? If so, you may not be thinking too much about staff morale. Remember, a happy member of staff is a productive one.

Okay, so you're unlikely to be able to pack your employees' packages with goodies such as a bonus. There are alternatives though. Extra holidays, subsidies on company products, shares in the business, or flexi-time for instance.

These are all ideas that will go some way to making sure your staff feel well looked after. After all, keeping your staff feeling motivated is fundamental to a healthy working environment.

And if you are undecided on whether to take give your workforce perks, don't fall into the trap of thinking other companies aren't doing it, so you don't have to either. Spread some cheer and see the rewards in your business performance.

The recession is coming to an end, so they say. That's not the case in a lot of businesses 'on the ground' though. So we will continue to struggle until the economy is back to its best.

Giving people incentives is a very important thing in my opinion. There are a lot of businesses out there who are not giving them and are realying on the goodwill of staff. I know of a company who continue to do appraisals for staff even though there is no incentive as there is not even a salary increse let alone a bonus. So the company is presumably going through the motions. Staff need to know they are wanted. That way they are nurted and feel the company is giving them more than just a job.

It is important too for a company to make sure they are keeping the staff aware of any changes, to make sure they know they are making a difference.

Recession recovery can only work when people are back in work and jobs aren't being lost at the rate they are now.

The building trade is picking up, i am told, so that's a good sign.
