That elephant…

For The Naked Office we filmed over 45 hours of material for a programme lasting just over 45 minutes – the highlight?
The elephant / truth in the room session.

When you bring the elephant into a meeting, you speak the truth – which everyone knows must be said to move forward, and yet it rarely is. People avoid it, dance around it, look away from each other when the subject comes close.

You know exactly what I am talking about.

That’s right – so, go take it into a meeting today!

Or to a one to one

Be polite, be professional, be sensitive

Above all, be honest.

With love and best wishes

the problem is that we have a whole menagerie of taboo beasts, not just the elephant in the room.

The use of large beasts as a metaphor is an interesting psychological facet of our behaviour, that extends beyond the simple avoidance of difficult topics. Please see http://tinyurl.com/taboozoo for more details.

I don't have this issue, I'll say anything to anyone at any time. What is the point otherwise? This doesn't mean I am not professional or sensitive but fundamentally creating taboos in business is a disaster waiting to happen.

I don't have any elephants and am happy. I choose to say what I want in meetings and am always true to what I believe. Not sure I have any large animals hidden away actually. I am all out in the open with how I feel.
