How do I break the news gently?
I have a project for two...and three people expecting to be involved. I want two of them to do the project. The other one will not like my decision in omitting them. So, how do I make the other one feel important, worthwhile even, when I tell them they will be doing something else rather than what it is they feel they ought to be contributing to?

Devise a second project, say it's more important than the first, and say there is only one person in the organisation is capable of doing it. Simple!
Or, just tell them straight that you don't think they are up to the task. Communication is very important in business and sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
I would try not to burn the birdges in this scenario, you never know what may happen to the 2 who get the project. They could leave at any time etc. Why not try keep the third resource involved as a project resource but not at the same level as the other 2 but still valued!
In order to keep the third resource challenged and feeling valued, they need to understand they will be the primary project resource on the next project etc.
The first two shouldn't be undermined though. They need to know they are in charge of the task. They are the ones who have been charged with getting on with it. The third person has to live with that. End of story really.
