If life is a beach, change it

THEY say a change is as good as a rest. It follows then that, for more and more people, having a rest is giving rise to them thinking about a change –in career.

A survey by directholidaybookings.co.uk revealed that almost half of people (of those surveyed) returned from holiday with more than just special memories of their beach exploits on their minds.

Many people in their 40s and 50s are deciding to break the habit of sticking with jobs they don't enjoy. They are, though, advised to think it through carefully after the natural 'flat' feeling of returning from their chosen holiday location, exotic or otherwise.

With the ecomy the way it is it might not be for you either. Then again...

I changed my career a few years back and it was the best thing I ever did. You only live once so best to get on and do what you believe you are capable of in your life.

I returned from a four week holiday last year and then promptly decided to resign and start my own business. For me it was a lifestyle decision - I was tired of putting in long hours and having increasingly less control over my time. I could see the next ten years of my life, as I moved into more and more senior roles, becoming more controlled by external forces.

Now I work for myself and, although I still put in long hours, I have a lot more control over my time. I regularly break during the day to visit friends or have lunch with my wife and then return to work of an evening to get what I need done. This change in approach to my work has made a HUGE difference in my stress levels - even the grey hairs appear to be reducing in number!

I resigned from a well paid job at Cornhill Insurance in 1998, it was the most stupid thing I have ever done, and I would never recommend it to anyone. Get another job secured first, or get your business off the ground while you are in your existing job.
