Manage your project well

PROJECTS run organisations, and can ruin them as well. We manage them every day and so often they go wrong. All projects would be in a far healthier state, with more delivered on time, to budget and really meeting the needs of the company, if they all had a clear business owner.

There should be no such thing as a specific departmental project, everything an organisation does must lead to an agreed, stated and measurable benefit. Team cohesion and leadership must be the top priorities and the more mission-critical the project, the more senior its business owner should be.

I like to keep a hands-on approach to everything I touch, at home or at work. That why I remain on top of things and in control.

Keeping projects working is the right thing to do and delegation is key to ensuring you are involving everybody in the business. Being part of a team is the one thing I love about business. It is a wonderful thing when the right team is in place.

Projects can detract from the actual job in ahnd so it's important to make sure they are only a secondary focus, not the primary one. Otherwise you can forget about the things that are really important to the company.

I agree 100% - as an ex IT man I remember with horror the number of projects, and amounts of time and money that we used to waste on so called "internal" projects - there is no such thing and I wish I had realised that years ago. DT
