Should someone lie for the boss to guarantee a promotion?

A friend of mine was asked to cover up an email scam that went wrong.She has decided that it would compromise her position despite the fact that person has promised her an easier path to success in the company.

 What defines your rise will define your demise! Lie to get ahead and it will all catch up with you in the end. Of course, one little tiny lie couldn't hurt I suppose...

There are lies, and lies, and as you say, does it depend on the size of the lie? I think it's a dangerous game but then I'm not the one in that position.

 But the question is 'should' someone lie. I think the answer to that has to be 'No, they shouldn't'. But it does depend on the context.
