Where do you go, to form your opinions?

Do you go to the newspaper that reflects the opinions you already have, or do you seek out different ones, with different opinions, and make up your own mind? In the UK, that might be The Daily Mail followed by The Guardian.

Do you go to the book that supports your existing view of the world, or do you read books with polarised views, and make up your own mind? For example, you might read extracts from The Bible, and then The God Delusion.

I was flicking through The National – a newspaper in the UAE, and glanced at a headline – on first reading I thought it said:

“Roadworks on Corniche Cause Disruption”

The sort of headline one would see every day in newspapers around the world – roadworks on a major road are always a “problem.”

After turning the page, I realised that was not what it had read. I turned back, and sure enough, the actual headline had been:

“Roadworks on Corniche Cause Diversion”

What a brilliant headline – a diversion – a simple fact.

Leaving me and other readers to form our own opinion.

Who, where and why do you go, to form your opinions?

With thanks to David Prichard for this idea

With my love and best wishes to you all
David

I read a lot of papers and I make my own mind up regardless of what I read. I have strong views and keep to them. I understand misconstruing what you read though. It's easy to think about something that you thought you read and then compare it to what you actually read. Makes you think.
