I think there is a balance to be had from life and it's a case of juggling the two to make it work. I enjoy both in equal measure. I think living to work can be harmful to the health while working to live is what it should be about, as relaxation is key to so much that is gooid about what humans can achieve. Otherwise we'd all die of a heart attack pretty quickly.
Love the work you do or get a different career - then you can discard all of this "life work" balance nonsense that implies when we are at work, we are not living. Oh yes, take less work home, and bring more of yourself to work!
I used to fill an 80 hour week with the same amount of work I now do in less than 50. In fact my most productive days are shorter which is down to self-imposed deadlines. For example if I finish at 4pm then I get the job done, if I leave it open ended then I will lose focus more often as the time restraints don't exist. I agree with David though, find something you have a passion for, because spending a large amount of time doing something you don't want to do is crazy!
Writing this has just added 5 minutes to my day! Today is open ended day obviously....next week 6 hour days only, oh and a three week holiday in August coming! Choice, the healthy approach work.
People who have a conflict between family/home life and work do need to address it becuase one will suffer in the end and it may not be the the most important one. Time goes quickly and there is only one chance at the now so make sure you sepnd time doing what you want. Hobbies and relationships can slip away from you becuase you 'can always pick them up another day' - the question is when? make it this weekend before it's too late.
