Inspiration
If there was a single, defining moment when the idea of The Naked Leader was born, it was while my family were watching Bridget Jones Diary. The belief of Naked Leader was inspired by the scene between Bridget (Renne Zellweger) and Mark (Colin Firth):
Bridget: That'll be my taxi. Good night.
Mark: Look, um... I'm sorry if I've been...
Bridget: What?
Mark: I don't think you're an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother's pretty interesting. And you really are... an appallingly bad public speaker. And you tend to let whatever's in your head... come out of your mouth... without much consideration of the consequences.
I realize that when I met you at the turkey curry buffet... that I was unforgivably rude and wearing a reindeer jumper...that my mother had given me the day before. But the thing is, um... what I'm trying to say very inarticulately is... that, um...i n fact... perhaps, despite appearances... I like you very much.
Bridget: Ah. Apart from the smoking and the drinking... and the vulgar mother and the verbal diarrhoea.
Mark: No. I like you very much - just as you are.
Screenplay by Helen Fielding, Andrew Davies and Richard Curtis – adapted from the novel by Helen Fielding.
Those last words changed my life forever – just as you are
For years I had been told by people how I was, how I was doing, how I should be. I was told that I am good, I am bad; I am clever, I am not; I am this, I am that.
And these words made me realise – I Am
And so are you – You Are – and what a miracle that is, in itself, by itself.
The Naked Leader as a title came from my daughter Olivia, while we were watching Jamie Oliver as The Naked Chef. It could easily have come from reading The Naked Lunch, watching The Naked Ape or The Naked Civil Servant. There are lots of “Naked’s” around and that has itself given us a bit of a challenge with e-mails and online!
