Give yourself a ‘good’ talking to – by Steve Lavelle

Steve Lavelle works for The Phoenix Group as Learning and Development Consultant. He is a client, a friend and most importantly a fellow Evertonian. He also understands the psychology of the brain far better than I do…

Are you aware you will have more conversations with yourself then with any other person in your life? Did you also know the brain is like a huge electrical circuit board and each time you have these conversations the electricity in the brain creates a neurological pathway called a Dendrite.

Let’s imagine these Dendrites are Superhighways. They are very powerful things as each time you have the same or a similar thought the brain finds the same Superhighway, makes it more powerful, smoother and easier for the electrical current to find.

Catch 22!!! The result is quite simply these thoughts become our beliefs. If you tell yourself you can’t achieve something then you won’t. Fact!!!  It’s a self fulfilling prophecy backed up by science. Good news, these Superhighways can be closed down very quickly, simply reverse the thought. Tell yourself 10 times a day for two weeks that you are awesome and you’ll start to see positive results as you create new Superhighways more powerful than the old ones. So when you face a challenging situation or have a belief you can’t do something give yourself a ‘good’ talking to and you’ll be amazed at the results.

Thank you Steve

With love and best wishes to you all

  • That’s such a great post. The very powerful message is clear. Positive thinking can help…and does help. Someone mentioned on here before about golfer Tiger Woods and what he does. If a round isn’t great he just says, ‘I’m getting closer to where I want to be.’ He never has a negative thing to say to press. He is telling his sub-conscious mind to just do it. And the good vibes he is giving the sub conscious mind means it will achieve for him more often than not.

  • Powerful message I agree. Sometimes it helps just to keep saying the right things to yourself and then everything rubs off.

  • I often say negative things and they can backfire. I shall take the advice and adopt a different mindset.

  • Talking to oneself, I was always told, is the first sign of madness.
It’s amazing how many people you look at in cars for instance, who look like their talking to themselves although they are on the hands free!

  • These superhighways. It’s reassuring they can be reversed.
How many times do we say things like, ‘there’s no way I can do that.’
Then of course we go and achieve it.
I guess if we say things often enough we either achieve or we don’t depending on our way of thinking. I would draw the line at walking on hot coals though. A friend of mine did that and while she did it she was in a lot of pain for two or three weeks afterwards with burnt feet!

  • The enormity of the mind and it’s thinking is incredible. To think that all that is happening in the brain at any one time is mind blowing. We should be thankful we are able to chance a negative impulse to a positive one, rather like a smoker pulling back from the brink after 20 years by giving up and giving their lungs a chance to breathe.
